Mental Health Law

We have a very successful mental health department that is committed to protecting the rights of mental health patients, whether in hospital or in the community. The department is headed by Michael Butler, who is a member of the Law Society panel of approved mental health solicitors, and who regularly lectures to other professionals on mental health law. We are asked to undertake work on behalf of patients throughout the country.

The principal areas of work that we cover are:

  • Advice on lawfulness of detention under the Mental Health Act 1983
  • Representation at Mental Health Review Tribunals
  • Representation at Managers’ Hearings
  • Advice on entitlement to care in the community
  • Advice on complaints regarding treatment
  • Advice on compulsory treatment
  • Applications to the Court of Protection

We aim to provide a standard of representation with which all our clients will be happy, and we place particular emphasis on staying in close contact with our clients throughout their cases. We would expect to see a new client within 24 hours of an initial call, and will then be on hand to provide telephone advice 24 hours a day.

Should you wish to discuss representation in your mental health case, you should contact Michael on 01823 323 665, or by email at mb@butler-solicitors.co.uk.
